Alan Duncan Alan Duncan: A Key Player in the Conservative Party's Future? Alan Duncan has been described as a 'right-wing libertarian' and is Conservative MP for the constituency of Rutland and Melton. He is Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, and has spoken publicly about the Conservative party's need to modernise its image and push forward its members who are 'good at' television. Duncan has worked for oil company Shell, and for 'an independent commodity company as a trader of crude oil and refined products,' as his website puts it. He became an MP in 1992, and has held various positions within the Conservative party since then. Alan has written a handful of books, including a biography of former party leader and friend William Hague, and a publication setting out his political ideas and beliefs called 'Saturn's Children: How the State devours liberty, prosperity and virtue.' This latter publication proved controversial for advocating the legalisation of drugs and the chapter was excised when Duncan became Shadow Health Minister. It is, however, available to read on his official website, complete with a (somewhat dubious) disclaimer. With a group of inner planets
in Aries Alan has developed a reputation for being gung-ho and
'boisterous.' Being born at a new Moon doubles this up, because the new
Moon phase is itself Arien in nature. Here are some quotes illustrating
Alan's Arien qualities:"Economic libertarian who rushes in where more prudent Tories fear to tread" Andrew Roth, The Guardian "Duncan, whose height (he claims 5ft 6in, but he is exaggerating) and style have prompted sobriquets like 'the Bonsai Heseltine'" Paul Routledge, The Independent "People
sometimes say that the all-knowing Almighty, seeing how small some of
His creatures are to be, has made them boisterous to compensate.
But I
think that, seeing how boisterous Mr Duncan was going to be, the
Almighty made him small, to limit the damage" Mars in Gemini really does nothing to ground this
Arien firestorm - it's more of a scatter-gun style - but with Mars in
opposition to Saturn there is likely to be a 'stop/go' pattern of
behaviour, and perhaps a feeling that he is raring to go and everyone
around him is slow, a nay-sayer, or a scaredy-cat. With the Sun trine
Saturn he will not lack self-discipline or management skills, but may
take it for granted that the long-haul is taken care of, rather than
putting his energies consciously and deliberately into taking care of
it himself. This is someone who will most probably feel very
comfortable being in charge, but who lacks emotional depth, a sense of
complexity, and diplomatic skills. It is one thing to be a human
dynamo, and quite another to be a democratic representative. A bias for
action devalues the need to reflect, intuit, think and consult. A
tendency to push towards what he wants leaves no room for considering
what everyone else wants or what is good for the whole. In other words,
when consciousness of personal interests is immediate and strong,
awareness of the dispassionate and impartial public interest suffers. There is much more that could be written about
this chart, and this short introduction may be expanded in future, if
Alan is returned to his former seat in the general election on 5th May
